The University of Southern Maine developed a Maine Regulatory Training and Ethics Center (MeRTEC) in direct response to concerns expressed by our community partners that the expanded regulatory climate in which they are operating and the risks associated with noncompliance were impeding innovation and economic growth.
As part of Maine’s public university system, USM is uniquely place to make a meaningful contribution to education and training in these areas and in so doing to service an important community need.
This center provides technical assistance, trainings in specific regulatory areas, internships and a new minor and undergraduate certificate in regulatory ethics. In addition, in collaboration with the University of Maine School of Law — with support from UNUM, WEX, Inc., the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce- successfully launched its new Regulatory Compliance Certificate Program for non-lawyer compliance personnel the Fall 2017. The inaugural cohort has now completed its courses and anticipates expansion, including an on-line component, in the fall semester.
